History

  • 1949

  • The Rt. Revd. R.O. Hall started plans to run a Children's Club in a room lent by the Pak Tai Temple in Stone Nullah Lane.

  • 1950

  • St. James' Boys and Girls Club was formally founded.

  • 1967

  • Mrs. Martha Baker, the wife of Bishop Baker, officiated at the opening ceremony of the Chung Pak Club. It marked the beginning of the Settlement's services for the elderly.

  • 1969

  • The Home Help Service was introduced for members of the Chung Pak Club.

  • 1971

  • We launched the elderly meal service by instituting the Elderly Canteen.

  • 1972

  • The Home Help Service for the Elderly was made available to non-members.

  • 1973

  • The Adult Centre (later Adult Service Division) was established to organize the Settlement's services for the elderly.

  • 1974

  • Laundry Service for the elderly was introduced.
  • We organized the first elderly camping activity, breaking the norm of elders should not involve in camping activity.

  • 1976

  • The first issue of "The Voice" was published by the Voluntary Work Group.
  • We started in provision of showering facility and showing service to the needed elders. St. James' Settlement has the complete service facilities of a district elderly community centre.

  • 1977

  • A sports day for the elderly in Victoria Park was jointly organized by the Settlement, the Social Welfare Department, the District Office and other related voluntary agencies in the Eastern and the Wanchai districts. It was the first of its kind of Hong Kong.

  • 1978

  • A seminar about retirement was held and later the Retired Persons' Association was founded.
    The Hotline Service for the Elderly started.

  • 1979

  • The Day Care Centre for the Elderly was set up with a subsidy from the World Council of Churches and the Government.

  • 1982

  • The first Pre-Retirement Education seminar was held and a booklet was published.

  • 1984

  • The seminar "Care for Care-giver" was organized and this was the first of its kind to be held in Hong Kong.
  • In Conjunction with the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Hong Kong, the Adult Services Division introduced the Psycho-Geriatric Assessment Service.

  • 1987

  • With the increase of the available space in the new building, the Day Care Centre for the Elderly could double its membership to 40 persons.
  • The new multi-service community centre is officially opened by H.E. The Governor Sir David Wilson, K.C.M.G.. The Rt. Revd. Peter K.K. Kwong dedicated the building to the glory of God.

  • 1989

  • The Adult Health Promotion Centre was established to offer physical check up service to adults.

  • 1990

  • With the subvention from the Government, the Settlement started another Multi-service Centre for the Elderly on the 11th floor of Sheung Wan Urban Council Complex at the Central and Western District. The Settlement hence formed the Adult Services Division (Central and Western).

  • 1991

  • The Elderly Centre Member Representatives' Joint Council was formed in the Central and Western District under our keen co-ordination and advocacy.

  • 1992

  • The Adult Services Division (Wanchai) organized a group of enthusiastic skilled volunteers to offer voluntary home repair and maintenance service to those elderly in need. The "Home Repair and Maintenance Service" programme won the Oriental Charity Award organized by the Oriental Daily in 1993.
  • To cultivate learning attitudes among the elderly, the Adult Services Division (Central and Western) run a series of educational and skill learning classes in Saturday afternoons for elderly to enroll. This marked the beginning of the Elderly Continuing Education Services in the Settlement.
  • The Adult Services Division (Central and Western) established the Caregivers Resources Centre and subvented by the Hong Kong Community Chest.

  • 1993

  • The first Elderly Road Safety Patrol Team of Hong Kong Island was established in the Settlement.
  • The first non-subvented, self-financing home for the elderly started its operation. It was the Madam Hui Mok Tak Yu Home for Aged located at Des Voeux Road West.

  • 1994

  • The Adult Services Division (Central and Western) introduced the Elderly Outreach Service.

  • 1995

  • The Li Chit Street Home for the Aged and the Li Chit Street Single Person Hostel started operation.

  • 1996

  • Organizing on-the-job training course for elderly service units under the Civil Administration Bureau of Guangzhou.
  • The Adult Service Division (Central & Western) first introduced services for street sleepers.
  • Subject to the quick expansion of services, the Adult Services Division (Wanchai) was divided into the Wanchai Adult Services Community Support Division and the Wanchai Adult Services Care and Health Division.
  • The Multi-service Centre for the Elderly in Wanchai and Central & Western district receive subvention in running the "Older Volunteers programme" and "Social Networking for the Elderly".
  • The Adult Services Division (Central & Western) was renamed as the "Central & Western Adult Services Division".

  • 1997

  • "The Voice", a newsletter specially published for the elderly, was the first newsletter of its kind to be put onto the internet at http://www.thevoice-hk.org
  • Sai On Centre was established in Sai Ying Pun Sai On Lane to provide services for the street-sleepers and day relief services.
  • Causeway Bay Home Help Service was established.

  • 1998

  • Adult Health Promotion Centre firstly offers pediatric check-up program for woman plus the pre-marital health check plus pre-marital counselling and consultation.
  • The Kai Ching Tong Library for the Elderly started to operate. It was the first library specialized for elderly readers on the Hong Kong Island.
  • The Wanchai Adult Services Community Support Division introduced the non-subverted, self-financing Home Care Assistance Service to provide in-home care such as companion and escort services to the elderly. It aimed at releasing care-givers from stress in looking after their elderly family members. Central and Western Adult Services Division also introduced Home Care Service to the elderly who lived in the district.
  • Video series for care-givers to enhance their knowledge in caring elderly suffering from stroke and Parkinson were produced by the Central and Western Adult Services Division. The production was the first of its kind in Hong Kong.
  • Together with the Civil Administration Bureau of Guangzhou, we organized the Certificate Course for Staff Working in Elderly Home, and on-job training for rehab aides.
  • A transitional residential service for elderly was initiated by the Central and Western Adult Services Division to provide temporary housing service for elderly in need.
  • Support Teams for the Elderly (STE) were implemented in two Multi-service Centres for the Elderly.
  • The True Light Home for the Aged was opened.

  • 1999

  • The Li Chit Street Home for the Aged obtained the ISO 9001 certification.
  • The Wanchai Adult Services Care and Health Division gathered different clinical professions and formed the Rehabilitative Therapy Team, providing assessment and treatment services for the elderly.
  • Hui Mok Tak Yu Home for the Aged was closed and renovated for the use of day services in 2001.
  • Day Care Centre for Demented Elderly was opened.
  • True Light Home for the Aged developed a Dementia Care Unit.

  • 2000

  • The Central and Western Adult Services Division, together with the University of Hong Kong, organized a pilot project on supportive services to care-givers of demented elderly.
  • The settlement realigned and integrated the existing service divisions related to elderly and health services into the "Continuing Care", endorsed the vision and mission statement of Continuing Care and managed with a new model.

  • 2001

  • Commencement of Enhanced Home and Community Care Service in Wanchai District.
  • "Elderly Learning Centre" re-named as "Evergreen Learning Institute".
  • Establishment of homepage of Continuing Care "www.sjscare.org"

  • 2002

  • Day Rehabilitation Centre was started operation.
  • Adult Health & Promotion Centre renamed and renewed as "Multi Medical and Health Centre" , with additional new services include: Orthodontics Service, Geriatric Clinic, Gynecology Clinic, Out-patient Clinical Chiropractic Clinic, Foot Reflexology (Foot Massage), Oriental Life Counselling Service and Subconscious Smoking Cessation Service etc.
  • The first web-site www.icarer.org launched to provide information for caregivers of the elderly.

  • 2003

  • The Day Care Centre for Demented Elderly was integrated into the Day Care Centre for the Elderly.
  • Community Nursing Team was set up on 1 April 2003.
  • The two Multi-Service Centre for the Elderly (M/E) transformed into District Elderly Community Centre (DECC).
  • Wun Sha Elderly Centre integrated with Wanchai District Elderly Community Centre to provide services to elders living in Wanchai District.
  • Lai Tak Estate was merged into the service boundary of Wanchai District Elderly Community Centre by Social Welfare Department.
  • Community Investment and Inclusion Fund of Elderly Commission granted three years operation fund to "Community Mutual Support Network" program of the Retired Persons Association.
  • From 1st April 2003, Home Help Services Team restructured to become Integrated Home Care Services Team (IHCST).
  • Dietetic Service Unit was set up to provide centre-based and outreaching services to the elderly.

  • 2004

  • Kin Chi Dementia Care Support Centre set up as self-financing service to provide the day respite, in-home support service, early identification of early dementia patients, community education and advocacy work.
  • With supporting by donation, Rehabilitative Therapy Team able to purchased a set of portable Snoezelen kit for providing Multi-Sensory Stimulation therapy to severe dementia elders in Day Care Centre for the Elderly.

  • 2005

  • Through the connection of Central, Western and Islands District Office of the Social Welfare Department, we able to obtain the sponsorship of the Shun Tak Fraternal Association in setting up the Joints Rehabilitation Centre.
  • Extension of our Enhanced Home & Community Care Service to the Central & Western District.

  • 2006

  • The first provider of community foot care service in Hong Kong.
  • Scenic Resort (Nursing Home), the Settlement's first contract home was solicited in late 2005 and elders were admitted as planned in July 2006. True Light Home for the Aged, Residential Meal Service, Dietetic Consultation Service, together with this new Home have formed the Residential Care Services under the Continuing Care.

  • 2007

  • 40th Anniversary of Elderly Services in the Settlement.

  • 2008

  • Two District Elderly Community Centres and a Neighbourhood Elderly Centre has started to provide services for the hidden elders.
  • Commencement of Evergreen Day Care Centre for the Elderly in Chai Wan.
  • The two District Elderly Community Centres have enhanced the counseling and long term care referral services.
  • The two District Elderly Community Centres started the Home Environment Improvement Scheme for the Elderly.

  • 2009

  • Open Day of Kin Chi Dementia Care Support Centre's 10th Anniversary.
  • Commencement of Caring Van Service.

  • 2010

  • Commencement of Patient Empowerment Programme.

  • 2012

  • 於筲箕灣開辦健頤中心，以回應港島東區對認知障礙症(老年痴呆症)患者及照顧者的急切需要。
  • 雅明灣畔護老院參加香港救世軍及香港老年學會主辦的「香港安老院舍完善人生關顧計劃」。
  • 成功承辦醫管局新界西聯網「綜合心理健康服務」，於天水圍、屯門、元朗普通科門診，為患有抑鬱情緒的病人進行心理評估、心理輔導及跟進服務。

  • 2013

  • 與高錕慈善基金、「流金頌：賽馬會長者計劃新里程」攜手合作，推出全港首架專為認知障礙症患者及其家屬提供的16噸流動服務車，名為「賽馬會高錕腦伴同行」流動車，為全港18區市民提供一站式免費服務。
  • 於雅明灣畔護老院推行「頤‧在家安老策劃服務」，以配合「長者社區照顧服務券試驗計劃」，提供長者日間照顧及到戶家居照顧服務。

  • 2014

  • 隨著本會堅尼地道大樓啟用，持續照顧服務新增服務包括 :

    - 灣仔健智支援服務中心，專為認知障礙症患者而設的日間支援服務中心

    - 首創HUBBA LAB服務，以創新活動如拉闊假期(LIVE HOLIDAY),長者歷奇活動(ADVENTURE RIDER)，讓退休人士獲更豐富的經理、擴展視野。

    - 賽馬會R3綜合體健中心，融合復廈治療與運動科學的知識，協助患者減輕傷病痛楚、重建健康體魄。

  • 獲社聯伙伴基金公司支持於天水圍開辦「心悠計劃」服務曾受情緒困擾的婦女，重新展新生活

  • 2015

  • 成功招標承辦香港島區改善家居及社區照顧服務，令本會長者服務伸展服務至全港島區

  • 2016

  • 開展全新服務「樂樓梯」計劃，提供了以撐桿式爬梯機專人服務，協助行動不便之長者上落樓梯，行無障礙，走出社區，給予長者實際需要，改善生活質素
  • 成立「安‧好居家寧養服務」，為居家寧養的長者提供一站式服務，讓患者在生命最後階段依然活得舒適、安心。同時讓家人得到支持，紓解照顧壓力，與患者繼續安享愉悅的居家的生活，共度美好時光，且讓生死兩相安。

  • 2017

  • 推出「盛饌」服務，為受吞嚥問題困擾的長者帶來嶄新而尊貴的「營」格用餐體驗
  • 參與醫管局「智友醫社同行」先導計劃，成立「頤‧樂‧智學堂」，以「醫社合作」模式，透過長者地區中心提供認知障礙症的社區支援服務

  • 2019

  • 加入「中風復康計劃」

  • 2020

  • 推出「656照顧者好幫搜」一站式網上互動資訊平台，與護老者同行，為他們提供簡明、全面、實用的照顧資訊，並提升其身心靈健康，致力讓長者安享晚年，達到「老吾老，以及人之老」的和樂社會。
