St. James Settlement Funeral Assistance Scheme sponsored by the Lions Club of South Kowloon

In response to the elders who lack family support and show concerns over their funeral arrangements, Funeral Navigation Service was launched in 2004. The service aims to respect their personal wishes and make arrangements for death duties in advance to reduce their worries and realize their self-esteem. The service also provides community education to promote a positive and open attitude towards death.

For elders who receive Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) Scheme, the burial grant provides a safety net for them that their funeral expenses are reimbursed when they pass away. For those non-CSSA recipients, however, they may encounter economic difficulties to reserve enough funeral budget for their death duties, making them feel worried and helpless.

Fortunately, the Lions Club of South Kowloon has pledged their support for a Funeral Assistance Fund ("the Fund") to provide funeral support to elders or persons who are terminally ill and living in economic distress and hardship to support their funeral expenditure.

Respect personal wishes, encourage service users to make arrangements for death duties in advance and prevent their wishes from being terminated due to financial hindrance to realize self-esteem in life.

The Fund’s Service

The Fund's objective is to support the funeral expenditure for elders or persons who are terminally ill and living with economic difficulties but not receiving CSSA.

A basic funeral service shall cover the following items: cleaning and dressing of the deceased; purchasing items for basic funerals (standard coffin with red/white knitted layer, coffin items, shroud, soft bedding, linen for the deceased, ceremonial items, framed portrait of the deceased, lucky tokens); a simple ceremony to be conducted in hospital/morgue, selection of burial e.g. cremation, green burial or application for allocation of a new niche in the government columbarium, as per the last wish of the deceased.

The financial support for a basic funeral would be adjusted by benchmarking the burial grant provided under CSSA.
